
Friday 27 January 1pm … in Evenings With The Orchestra, programmer Rex Burgess ventures ‘south of the border’ to Mexico, with compositions that include Silvestre Revueltas’s The lady colonel, ‘a dark-hued ballet that combines local colour with ‘supra-Romanticism of tremendous visceral strength’, and Carlos Chavez’s ‘complex and scintillating’ Piano concerto.
Sunday 29 January 10am … programmer Glenys Eddy ranges widely over The Classical Era, bringing us a symphony by Johann Christian Bach, songs by Schubert and Beethoven, chamber music by Boccherini and Mozart, and Paganini’s Violin concerto no 4. Several of the performances them 2MBS Fine Music Sydney concert recordings, and all include Australian musicians.
Thursday 2 February 2:30pm … in American Warmth, programmer James Nightingale precedes Aaron Copland’s popular Suite from Appalachian Spring with Florence Price’s Piano quintet (one of many of her compositions discovered a half-century after her death in the attic of an abandoned home) and André Previn’s Honey and rue, a song cycle to words by Toni Morrison which Previn wrote for the soprano Kathleen Battle.
