
Thursday 27 October at 2pm, presented by Stephen Gard… In Family Connections, programmer Frank Morrison brings together music by Dvorak and Josef Suk. Suk was a pupil of Dvorak at the Prague Conservatoire and then a guest at his summer residence, where he prepared piano reductions of Dvorak compositions and courted his daughter Otilka. The pair soon married. Frank has included Suk’s opus 1, Piano quartet in A minor, dedicated to his teacher.
Saturday 26 October at 10am, presnted by Troy Fil … In Centres Of Music, programmer Rita Felton focuses on graduates of the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Philip Glass, who studied composition there, is represented by a performance by Nicolas Horvath of his Metamorphosis I, while Stephen Hough plays Mendelssohn’s Piano concerto no 2, John Williams conducts music he composed for Jane Eyre, cellist Mats Lidstrom participates in Tippett’s Fantasia concertante on a theme of Corelli and violist Nobuko Imai performs in Mozart’s Kegelstatt trio.
Monday 31 October at 2:30pm presented by Brian Cornish … In Out Of Tasmania, programmer Stephen Wilson has chosen music written by composers who were born or lived in Tasmania. They include Katharine (Kitty) Parker, whose piano piece Down Longford way was influenced and later orchestrated by Percy Grainger, and Peter Sculthorpe, represented here by The fifth continent, entered by the ABC in 1963 for the Prix Italia for radiophonic music.
