Each Friday, Barry O’Sullivan invites a studio guest onto Friday’s A Jazz Hourat noon. This week drummer Andrew Dickeson will be talking about his musical experiences, and the music selection for his forthcoming gig.
Andrew was born in Newcastle and grew up in a musical family, studying many instruments before taking up the drums at age ten, and working professionally from age 13. He studied at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, before heading to New York in 1991 to study with Jazz masters Art Taylor and Vernel Fournier. In 1992, he was the only non-American finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Drums Competition.
His latest album was Groove, which he described as “The music we recorded is all about the groove – the energy and the feeling of joy that comes with Jazz at its very best.” Listen as Andrew and Barry discuss musical influences and Andrew’s forthcoming gig.
