CHUTNEY

Sydney’s klezmer world fusion band CHUTNEY makes a compelling debut with their album Ajar. This release is a vibrant display of their dynamic range, featuring 13 tracks that span over an hour.

Over the past four years and 100+ shows around Australia, CHUTNEY has crafted a unique blend of traditional klezmer with an eclectic mix of genres.

Ajar is more than just a debut album; it’s a musical smorgasbord that seamlessly integrates klezmer dance tunes with samba rhythms, jazz lounge vibes, and even classical and pop references. The album ventures from Beethoven’s symphonic grandeur to the playful tones of pop singer Britney Spears, from the dramatic flair of Rimsky-Korsakov to the cinematic allure of The Godfather. With nods to Mozart and Fiddler on the Roof, CHUTNEY’s versatility is on full display, proving they can captivate diverse audiences with ease.

My favourite track from CHUTNEY’s new CD is Godfather Caravan, a brilliant rendition of legendary Nino Rota’s iconic composition. Originally written for the film The Godfather, Rota’s haunting melody is given a fresh, klezmer-infused twist. CHUTNEY seamlessly blends the song’s classic, dramatic essence with their signature world fusion style, creating a captivating cross-cultural experience. The result is a track that honours Nino Rota’s legacy while showcasing CHUTNEY’s innovative flair and musical versatility.

Whether you’re a klezmer aficionado or a curious listener, Ajar offers arrangements that are fresh and inventive, making old classics feel new and exciting.
