2MBS Fine Music Sydney’s Artists in Residence, Nexas Quartet, present their fourth studio album, George Gershwin – Music for Saxophone Quartets which features a collection of some of Gershwin’s most notable works adapted for the ensemble. The album also showcases collaborations with some of Australia’s leading classical musicians: Gerard Willems, Peter Coleman-Wright, Cheryl Barker and Daniel Rojas.
The Nexas Quartet has always held Gershwin in the highest regard due to his significant influence on their repertoire and style with his ‘Three Preludes’ being one of the first works the ensemble performed over 20 years ago. Gershwin’s innovative approach to blending classical and jazz elements aligns perfectly with the quartet’s mission of exploring and redefining the boundaries of saxophone music.
This fusion of styles in pieces like “Rhapsody in Blue” and “An American in Paris” not only showcase the saxophone’s versatility but also helps to elevate its status within both genres.
