This is the ensemble’s second recording dedicated to showcasing some previously unrecorded chamber music by pioneering Australian composer Margaret Sutherland and her close friend, Dutch-Australian composer Meta Overman.

One of the album’s highlights is Overman’s Sextet for Piano, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn — written for the same instrumentation as the famous Poulenc Sextet. The album also features Overman’s Quartet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon, alongside Margaret Sutherland’s Gallow Songs for soprano and clarinet, works for two pianos, and more.

Thanks to Jeanell Carrigan’s tireless research and publishing work, audiences can now finally hear and experience these extraordinary compositions. The Sirius Chamber Ensemble have delighted in bringing these works to life — capturing the creativity, colour and vivid musical imagery of two remarkable composers, whose music deserves far greater recognition..

Tune in to 2MBS Fine Music Breakfast between 6 – 9am Monday 18 to Friday 22 May to hear highlights from Lyrical Currents.
