By Barry O’Sullivan
While this ten-piece ensemble draws initial inspiration from the renowned Australian band Ten Part Invention, Mosaic distinguishes itself by its adventurous approach to composition and arrangement, merging a commitment to its musical heritage with notable originality and creative expression.
On its second release, Rinse and Repeat, the ensemble presents compositions that showcase the group’s signature blend of intricate harmonies, bold rhythmic choices and innovative vocal arrangements. This precise orchestration makes it exceptionally appealing to discerning big-band lovers. The multiple sonic landscapes on offer invite exploration from the outset.
The standout track, ‘For Macy’, with vocals from Liz Player, has eloquent solos on trombone (Lee Orszaczky), tenor (Elly Blackham) and piano (Ravi Trachtenberg-Ray).
A funk-inspired, ‘Got the Dogs Out’, underscored by the resonant baritone of Lachie Eggert over a consistently tight rhythmic foundation, is delightfully upbeat.
‘Dewdrops’ closes the album with strikingly sensitive vocals from Leah Reinhardt. Its elegant flow and inventive rhythmic shifts result in a jazz statement that is harmonically, vocally and texturally engaging.
With the icing on the cake being the choice of material in eight inspiring original compositions by Australian composers under the age of 25, this album is a clear and assertive winner from its onset to its outcome, emanating from a jazz ensemble that is quietly and rapidly becoming an exciting force on the national jazz scene.
