
Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD, CVO lived a life defined by service, compassion, and intellect. Born in Narrandera, New South Wales, she graduated from the University of Sydney in 1956 and dedicated her medical career to psychiatry, championing dignity and care in mental health. Appointed Clinical Director of Mental Health Services in 1993, she later made history as the second longest-serving Governor of New South Wales from 2001. Dame Marie also served as Chancellor of the University of Sydney and as Honorary Patron of 2MBS Fine Music Sydney.
In a statement released on Tuesday night, Mr Minns described her as “an extraordinary Australian and one of New South Wales’ most respected public servants”.
He announced a state funeral would be held for the “deeply loved mother of three children and six grandchildren”.
“On behalf of the people of New South Wales, I extend my deepest condolences to Dame Marie’s family, friends and all those who were inspired by her remarkable life,” the premier said.
Her legacy endures through leadership, humanity, and unwavering commitment to others.
