Ottorino Respighi is a composer known for being something of a polymath, speaking eleven languages fluently. It’s therefore no surprise that this collection of songs features works in Italian, French and English. But what strikes the listener strongly hearing this recording is the subtle depth of colour and the restrained emotion contained in these selections from Respighi’s lifetime of composing art song.
Tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Saskia Giorgini bring true artistic chemistry to their choices, informed by their respective experiences of searching for a means of artistic expression in the midst of the 2020 COVID lockdown. Opening in a world of sensual impressionistic colours, right through to the concluding set of Italian and Scottish folksongs, this recording is authentic and generous. From one lyrical treasure to the next, the artists lead the listener on a journey into the world of the imagination. A beautiful CD, featuring a fine artistic partnership in a shared expression of passionate engagement with the artistry of Respighi.
