Join the Australian Haydn Ensemble on 3 November for the modern-era premiere of a long-lost chamber version of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony – hidden for over 200 years. Hear Beethoven’s beautiful tribute to Haydn alongside Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, Boccherini, and a new work by rising star composer Ella Macens inspired by Beethoven’s Immortal Beloved letters. Historically informed? Of course! Dusty? Never!
Set in 1812, this program explores Beethoven’s mysterious “Immortal Beloved” letters, written days after a secret tryst with Countess Jozefina Brunszvik, possibly inspiring both his passionate words and the playful Eighth Symphony, conceived in the same hotel room.
Young Sydney composer Ella Macens responds with a new work for baroque strings, inspired by Beethoven’s emotional candour. The concert also features Vincenzo Cimador’s intimate chamber arrangement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Boccherini’s richly expressive String Sextet in F minor, Op. 24 No. 4. Presented in the Ensemble’s “unplugged” style, the evening blends mystery, romance, and musical brilliance from three masters of expression.
