This March, Pinchgut Opera opens its 2026 Sydney season with a landmark first for the company: an orchestral concert devoted entirely to the Orchestra of the Antipodes. This concert program presents Baroque masterworks by Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann in an historically scaled, one-to-a-part performance that reveals the clarity, vitality and conversational energy at the heart of this repertoire.
Highlights include Bach’s celebrated Violin Concerto in A minor, performed by Matthew Greco, and the Harpsichord Concerto in D minor, with Erin Helyard as soloist. Alongside Bach sits the inventive Telemann, admired for his imagination and range. His sonatas explore distinctive instrumental textures, including the unusual five-part combination of two violins, two violas and continuo, producing a sound world that is dark, warm and resonantly blended.
Heard at chamber scale, these works take on striking transparency, bringing inner lines, harmonic motion and rhythmic drive into vivid focus.
