Immerse yourself in the world of “colour music” through world premieres by Sydney composer Nicholas Vines, presented alongside Haydn’s String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76 No. 2 (“Fifths”) and Piano Trio No. 34 in B-flat Major, Op. 36 No. 3.
These performances by Sydney Art Quartet draw inspiration from modernist painter Roy de Maistre, whose pioneering theories linked colour and music. Fascinated by colour therapy for shell-shocked soldiers, de Maistre explored how colours correspond to musical notes and affect the human psyche.
His experiments, Colour Chart (c.1919), Colour Keyboard (c.1919), and (Colour Music) (c.1934), paved the way for artistic innovation. Composer Nicholas Vines and art historian Steven Miller will introduce the program, discussing the deep connections between art, sound, and emotion.
