This year the competition was hosted by Sydney which took place on Saturday, 23 November, at the renowned Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This thrilling contest was bursting with thunderous tones and flying strands of horsehair. The participants showcased extraordinary talent: 13-year-old Zachary Li from ArtSound Canberra dazzled with his performance of Ballade No.2 in F major, Op. 38 by Frédéric Chopin; 15-year-old Lieun Park from 3MBS Melbourne demonstrated remarkable maturity with her rendition of Hungarian Rhapsody, Op. 68 by David Popper; violinist Theonie Wang from 4MBS Brisbane captivated with the 3rd Movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto; and Jenny Su from 5MBS Adelaide delivered an inspiring interpretation of Scherzo No.1 in B minor, Op. 20 by Frédéric Chopin.
The jury faced a difficult decision and ultimately chose the exceptionally talented Noah Oshiro, representing 2MBS Fine music Sydney, who stunned with a breath-taking performance of Gaspar Cassadó’s Suite for Solo Cello: Prelude-Fantasia and an astonishing improvisation.
Noah began his musical journey at the tender age of three, taking up the cello, and has since developed into one of Australia’s most promising young talents. Currently in the final year of his Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium, Noah studies under the esteemed guidance of renowned cellist Julian Smiles. Oshiro’s dedication and talent have earned him numerous accolades, awards, and scholarships, which have afforded him opportunities to study both in Australia and internationally. These prestigious opportunities have allowed him to learn from some of the world’s leading musicians and collaborate with celebrated ensembles.
