In the same way as Nexus has rescued so many composers from oblivion, we can thank Melbourne-based Move Records for ensuring that some of our best Australian groups get to CD. Their latest brilliant move (pun intended) is to pair the classical trio Ensemble Liaison with the Tony Gould Trio, better known for their jazz interpretations.
They’ve taken a number of well-known classical pieces by the likes of Bach, Satie, Fauré and Schumann, one track has Ensemble Liaison consisting of piano, clarinet and cello playing the piece straight as written, the next track has the piano, sax and double bass of the Gould Trio improvising on it. The results are mixed, but always fascinating. I particularly liked Gould’s interpretation of Schumann’s Träumerei, which wends its way into quite a different dream world from Schumann, returning finally to recognisable bass camp.
They find Fauré’s Après un Rêve rather more difficult, Angela Davis’s saxophone wandering off dangerously into Luiz Bonfa territory at the beginning, but nonetheless equally enjoyable. The Tony Gould Trio wrap this wonderful confection up with a restrained, but lyrical, version of Gershwin’s Loved Walked In. Bravo Move, you’ve done it again!
