Meet Anoesis our 2021 Jazz Artists in Residence

Anoesis is a Sydney based quintet formed in 2017, its founding members meeting while studying music at the University of New South Wales. The group’s sound is complex and spontaneous, with intricate compositions emphasising groove and interactive group improvisation.

Each member’s individual compositional and improvisational style feeds into a sound rooted in the jazz idiom while drawing upon eclectic influences including electronica, rock, folk music, R&B and contemporary classical music.

2019 was a big year for the band: travelling to Romania to perform and receive the “Best Band” prize in the 13th Annual Bucharest Jazz Competition, releasing their debut Album “The Hermit” (available on bandcamp and streaming services) and ending the year welcoming drummer Ryu Kodama into the group and playing regularly in Sydney and interstate.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Anoesis has been fortunate enough to have performed as part of the Johnston Street Jazz live stream series in 2020 (receiving a favourable review by John Shand in the Sydney Morning Herald) and were enjoying a more active 2021, playing in Sydney venues such as Foundry 616, Lazybones and The Gasoline Pony.

As part of their residency, Anoesis plan to record an album based on a composition by Tomas McKeever Ford entitled ‘Dancing Waters’; a five-track album featuring original instrumental compositions which evoke the beauty and majesty of the rainforest and coastal landscapes of eastern Australia.
