Some purists prefer artists to stay in their lane, but often when they venture out of that tried and tested territory, we hear another side of their superb musicianship. Such is the case in the new recording of Sydney-based jazz pianist Tim Bruer.

Each Friday, Barry O’Sullivan invites a studio guest onto Friday’s A Jazz Hour at noon, this week saxophonist Gai Bryant meets up with Barry. Listen out for her hugely talented Cuban and Latino ensemble Caribé, and their latest release, Distant Waters.

The music on their latest release has much in common with contemporary jazz in composition and performance, blending Latin and jazz musicians and culture, enhanced with the very personal and distinctive sounds of the individual members of the group.

In producing his sixth album under his name and his thirteenth as a leader, Harry Mitchell wanted to create an album with a unifying theme, particularly one that could convey something about our lives through music. Carl Jung’s Man and His Symbols provided him with the perfect springboard for this process.

Pianist/composer Aaron Blakey’s latest offering is a collection of original compositions, weaving in memories from New Zealand and Australia with his time spent in Japan, in a session that is a travelogue of sorts within the jazz universe.

If it were possible to inhale the music of this contemporary jazz album certainly one would be transported into a state of sonic euphoria.
